My friend and I always wind up talking about food. He’s all about Herring, jam, and meatballs. Me, it’s all about the breakfast.
Definitely not the boring toast with jam, and coffee. I’m more after the feast type.
A traditional Filipino breakfast comes in different forms. But ultimately, we like it flavorful & filling. It should be enough to fuel us until the next meal (or morning snack, haha)
Pan de Sal & Kape (Bread & Coffee)
Pan, in Spanish is bread; Sal is Salt.. So essentially, this simple bread is made of flour, water and salt. Butter or Cheese is a perfect partner for this. And of course, hot brewed coffee.
“SiLog” meals which include a viand plus Sinangag (Fried Garlic rice) and itLog (Egg) ~ see how the wordplay there?
These are very common — they come in various regional versions, and served in street side stalls & even five-star hotels. It’s cheap, it heavy and mostly has the carbs & proteins you need for the day. My favorite is the LongSiLog which is the SiLog plus Longganisa, a cured pork sausage, seasoned with salt and pepper with lots of garlic.
Other SiLogs are:
ToSiLog ~ Tocino, cured sweet pork
BangSiLog ~ daing na Bangus, milkfish marinated in vinegar & garlic
TapSiLog ~ Tapa, cured beef slices
How about you, how do you like your breakfast?
I like big breakfast too 😉
